— The terror comes for those who watch. —

This is a true ghost story as told by a person known only as “Y”. It centers on a series of interviews conducted to discover the truth about a “listen-at-your-own-risk urban legend.” It is said that anyone who hears the legend will be cursed. And a “malevolent presence” seems to lurk within those interviews...

This project reconstructs the interviews as 360° videos, and presents them as interactive content using live-action VR.

— Video noise signals that the malevolence is nearby. —

If you watch these videos even a single time, you must look for all the sources of malevolence contained within. That’s the only way to escape the curse.

And when you do find them all, “something” will happen...

A genuinely creepy little cursed object

This is one of the creepiest VR horror experiences I’ve played. What makes it work is that it isn’t just about jumpscares; it’s about contamination, presence, and the horrible feeling that by watching the footage you are making yourself part of the curse. The 360° interview format is incredibly effective, because you’re always scanning the frame and dreading what might be somewhere behind you, beside you, or just out of sight. The best bits are brilliant: whispers in the menus, the hidden ghost woman in the footage, and the passthrough/mixed reality moments that make it feel like the game is leaking into your real room. The final scare was superb and absolutely got me. It’s not perfect. The “find her in the footage” mechanic is a great idea, but the visual effect used for her appearances didn’t always fully work for me, and the static/crackle cue sometimes gives too much away. I think it could actually have been even scarier with less signalling and more ambiguity. But overall, this is excellent. The acting is strong, the concept is smart, and the atmosphere is horrible in exactly the right way. If this sort of cursed-media, mockumentary, slow-burn VR horror is your thing, it scratches an itch that very few games do.

A VR ANALOG HORROR GAME???

This is by far the scariest experience I have ever had in VR... To the actors who made the 360 videos... I would personally give you all a Grammy award for how convincing this was... There's fourth wall breaks, there's sounds that play after watching certain videos, there's knocking on the door, FOR GOD'S SAKE IT HAS A MIXED REALITY FEATURE WHERE ONE OF THE VIDEOS JUST RANDOMLY SHOWS YOUR OWN BEDROOM FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE CUTTING OFF!!! There wasn't a moment where my fight or flight senses were not active... I was in fighting position getting ready to fight the ghost even though unlike traditional horror games I can't really do anything... All I can do is point and click on files... As I am writing this review I have just made it to the part where the game wants you to press A when you see the ghost. I'm terrified to find out what happens next but by the gods this game is actually really good and horrifying, I look forward to seeing other games like this one, as well as whatever projects you may drop in the future. I was so terrified of what was gonna be expected at the end. I figured that it was gonna use my passthrough for an arena for a final boss that I would have had to fight in my own room... But thankfully it was just a screamer where I took my headset off because I was a bit of a chicken to have to deal with it.
