Worth it for Star Wars fans.

🚨Full review available on Gamertag VR YouTube channel🚨 Overall this is cool tech demo for mixed reality on Quest3 and does indeed flex some graphical muscle in the virtual reality parts. It’s got all the signs of a big budget vr release and for $20 it’s not exactly breaking the bank and there is at least 4-5 hours of content plus online leader boards BUT… I’m not disappointed in the what we have, more that it could have been so much more. It’s clear playing in mixed reality is taxing for the Quest 3 and I do wonder how a true full virtual reality podracing experience might have been and that’s where I feel some disappointment. Do I recommend Star Wars Beyond Victory? Yes for Star Wars fans it’s a no brainer and cool experience, for everyone else heed what I’ve said that this is a tech demo, a vertical slice of something cool that you’ll soon forget you own after 4/5 hours.

Dropped Potential

The VR portion plays like Vader Immortal in that it holds your hand and tells you to fetch this, repair that, etc. but it doesn’t have any gameplay in VR that makes up for it. Choosing to race in mixed reality was a terrible decision as it’s not enjoyable at all. To finally get a VR podracing game and not be able to race in VR is criminal. It has a small story, but the lack of freedom makes it a chore. The planet is another middle of nowhere experience with nothing interesting to see. That and the racing mode are my primary reasons for such a low score. I hope ILM make better decisions on their next game. As an aside, it’d be nice to play in the Clone Wars era for once. I’m sick of the Empire and First Order settings. I want more of the space experience and war part of Star Wars instead of these small-scale landlocked barren planet experiences.

Why why WHY!

I just don't get it. We finally get a VR podracing game, and they choose to make the racing portion of the game tabletop? This could have been something really special. Instead, it's something I'll probably play a few times just because it's Star Wars, then forget I have it in my library. The worst part is they give you a taste of what could have been in the VR portion of the game just to switch to a tabletop view for the part that should be in VR. I'm incredibly disappointed. That said, it's not a terrible game. That just makes it harder. You can see the potential that was squandered. Frankly, I'm baffled.

Hey, Do Star Wars!

4 major titles on Quest from Lucas and ILM, and in NONE of them, do you fly an X-Wing around the Death Star shooting Tie Fighters. A game that would sell itself. Instead, we get this cartoonish dribble which, bafflingly, doesn't put you in the driving seat of a Podracer, which would have worked amazingly well in VR. I'm starting to think the head of ILM VR is an actual plank of wood. Star Wars in VR is as lost and directionless as Star Wars onscreen.

Beyond Victory

Beyond expectations. Alas, commenters unanimously and universally write about the lack of first person view, similar to Need For Speed No Limits on Android tablet. No limits except for the lack of a bumper camera. "It is nothing without the loop." The Simpsons It is nothing without the first person POV. If you want the pod racing first person view experience, play Dawn of Jets and fly with the canopy down and the volume down otherwise you'll get a voice always reminding you, " You are flying too fast with the canopy down!" This app is profound. I would give it a hundred stars out of ten. The adventure mode was mind blowing. I really felt like I was actually in the world of the movie that I saw in 1977 and wondered if Luke Skywalker was somewhere around. Adventure mode. The dioramas are incredible. I remember when I was young visiting friends and relatives who had more money and the best Star Wars toys. With the dioramas I feel like I also have the best Star Wars toys. The figures seem like pricey high end large size Star Wars Action figurines only found in the most upper class toy stores in Europe. I don't understand the opprobrium that some have expressed regarding adventure mode. It is the most extravagant over the top Star Wars experience that I have ever had. The mixed reality models level. When I set up C3PO, R2D2, the storm trooper, again, the massive Star Wars vibe. So much so I was still shaking after turning off the app. The racing mode gave me massive motion sickness. The only remedy is to scale it down to the smallest size. For some intangible reason, even though I was confused and motion sick, I still placed first in the pod race. The team that made this app are geniuses. Each and every one of them. The force will be with you, always.
