Great fitness game with a bright future
I just had a party with my friend in multiplayer mode in this fitness rhythm game!
I love many many hours in Beat Saber, so I will compare it to that.
Beat Saber vs Song Beater
Who wins?
Environments:
Song Beater
- BS's environments are more sophisticated, but Song Beater's are varied, and are much more creative than BS's.
- In Song Beater you can have a party with deep sea creatures, and a larger than life lighting show.
- The lighting show works in multiplayer, whereas that's not the case in BS
- More creative environments and use of VR.
Songs/OST:
Song Beater
- I like most of the songs in BS, but there is such a variation in the songs in Song Beater, which is simply refreshing
Multiplayer:
BS
- The system for setting up multiplayer is better in BS. And you can play with 5 others, whereas Song Beater only has 1v1
- BUT the environment work with multiplayer, which is such a huge plus
- The targets for the other player come flying in in a way that causes visual clutter and confusion, since it can look like they are for you.
Core mechanics
BS
- It's more satisfying to cut blocks, but Song Beater can catch up with some tweaks.
--- It says in Song Beater that you get more points for accuracy and power, but there's isn't any way to really feel that while playing. Clear, immediate feedback is a basic requirement!
- The targets can obscure each other easily in Song Beater
Pros:
- Variety of environments with creative use of the potentials of VR. I love the fact that there are bright outdoor environments. My favorite is the deep sea mega party world.
- Variety of songs, in both style and tempo.
- A few different game modes
- Decent amount of options and settings
- Multiplayer that uses environments and effects
- No stupid and demotivating "streak break" sounds and stuff, unlike FitXR and Audiotrip. And you can even disable the "miss" notification
- In multiplayer, you can hear the songs that the hosts is considering
Cons/things that need fixing
- The GUI is clumsy. It doesn't follow good, established practices regarding a clear and good interface. It needs a total rework
- Multiplayer works, but it's very confusing to set up, and there are no private room options etc.
- Targets can easily obscure each other
- Lack of proper feedback regarding hit power and accuracy.
- Supposedly, there are gamemodes with weapons and such, but I have no clue how to find them.
- BIG BIG ISSUE: the menu/pause song button is mapped to A/B X/Y buttons. Big mistake! Far too easy to press by mistake, AND we already have a dedicated "menu" button on the left Quest controller. Use it.
- Scrolling through the songs is annoying. Please allow scrolling with the thumb stick.
- Needs avatar options for multiplayer
- Multiplayer bugged out. I couldn't hear songor sea targets, while it worked fine for friend. I had to restart the game. Then it worked again.
- Needs multiplayer with many more players. I play Beat Saber multiplayer with lots of family and friends weekly.
Wish feature: in-game song mapping tool, like Audiotrip has.
Good work!
