Promising, but Frustrating
I recently tried Rift XR, and while the game shows a lot of potential, the experience has been disappointing for several reasons. First off, the hit registration is bad, which makes gameplay frustrating and inconsistent. There’s no party system, so theres no Exp share with friends and part calls are unnecessarily difficult. With that being said The in-game calling system is clunky and the calls aren’t private everyone can hear you still, and navigating the menu feels awkward. While it’s not hard to understand, it’s far from smooth, much like the controls and the worlds in the game. On top of that, the game wastes your time in ways that feel avoidable. Whether it’s the awkward design choices or the lack of basic features, these frustrations add up quickly. Additionally, my friends and I joined their Discord to offer feedback, hoping to help improve the game. Sadly, these suggestions weren’t well received. The community also came off as quite toxic, dismissing ideas and making unfounded accusations. Suggestions like adopting controls to help VRChat players transition more easily were met with hostility. The developers seemed defensive rather than open to constructive criticism, which made it hard to engage in any meaningful way. What’s worse is how passive-aggressive the developers and community can be. At first, they act nice, but if you end up on their bad side, they quickly become hostile and aggressive one of the community members threatened my friend by saying “I hope you’re using a VPN” clearly threatening to Dox my friend. It’s a frustrating dynamic that discourages anyone from giving feedback or getting involved. What’s frustrating is that in-game, we’ve been praised by other users for our suggestions. Many told us they agreed 100% with what we were saying but were too nervous to bring it up to the developers themselves. This shows there’s a real need for better communication and openness from the developers. A community can make or break a game, and unfortunately, Rift XR’s community leans toward the latter. It’s not very welcoming to people who think differently or don’t act in unison with the group. Instead of embracing diverse attitudes and ideas, they’re often hostile to newcomers who don’t conform to their way of doing things. Rift XR has potential, but it needs better hit detection, smoother menus and controls, and a more welcoming and constructive community if it wants to attract and retain players.
