Awesome intro, then straight downhill.
Mechs are cool! Hence, the download. The trailer and screenshots looked fantastic, and it is free, so it seemed like a no-brainer. This game got me pumped from the start! Very cool cinematic intro. I rarely get excited by or emotionally invested in VR game storylines but the setup in this actually had me feeling like I was the protagonist in a movie about saving humanity from alien invaders! What a great start! However, it was completely downhill after that. When the actual gameplay started, the flaws came to life. This game is essentially a wave shooter. During the first wave, which is kind of like a tutorial, I started running around a little, using the left joystick (NOT my body). Nope, the game wasn't having it. Similar to the dojos from the Vader Immortal series, a little signal showed that I was out of the designated play zone. However, this was FAR more sensitive than in Vader. I looked down and saw a blue glowing circle. It was TINY!!! Whenever I moved my body (headset) significantly, AND/OR when I moved the joystick, I was out of the zone. The screen went black with the prompt to return to the play area, all the while being molested by the baddies. I thought this was a bug or glitch at first but soon realized it was oddly by design. Also in the intro, I initially grabbed the sword with my left hand, thinking I would get a gun for my right. Nope, just the sword. No big deal; I would just switch it to my dominant right hand. Not possible. I couldn't let it go to switch hands. Weak. After dying in the intro, which I believe is a scripted inevitability, the screen glitched up and locked for a good 30 seconds or so. Not a good sign. Then the game righted itself and I was transported back to headquarters. When in headquarters, I was not able to click the weapon selection buttons with my fingers, but only the back of my hand. Such clumsy controls. Finally I was able to upgrade my sword (not a choice) and move on to the first level. Finally, I thought I was moving on to the real game! Disappointingly, the first level was...just another wave shooter. The worst part? Again, I couldn't really move...at all. Yes, you can swing your arms, but if your headset moves more than 6 to 8 inches, you'll receive a notification that you're out of the play area. Move that mech back into the 14-inch-diameter circle of play, sergeant! The game doesn't pause, either...you continue to get throttled by the naughty arthropods while you're awkwardly trying to position your head directly above the circle. Uninstall. Such a shame - this looked really cool.
