An old-school scrolling shoot-em-up

Similar to Pistol whip in a lot of ways with an emphasis on scoring, accuracy and bullet dodging. There are 7 levels with an 8th level to unlock Two difficulties and a 3rd difficulty to unlock. There are two ways to attack with the right controller as your main crossbow attack and your left hand as your limited lightning staff Your crossbow had unlimited shots and doesn't require reloading whilst your lighting wand requires mana (gained by killing enemies) The wand requires a few seconds to charge before it releases a blast that chains between enemies. Health is reduced every time you get hit but it replenishes as you kill enemies There is a bit of depth to the game with some enemies shots being destroyable by a well-placed shot, whilst others need to be dodged. For some enemies you score bonus points if you time the shots right (as they have their mouths open to shoot a fireball) The levels all end in a boss fight. Whilst initially, you may think.....not this dragon again XD But you quickly learn that with every new encounter, the dragon beefs up his attack patterns and truly becomes a test of your dodging abilities. Soon there will be even more hazards to contend with whilst dealing with the dragon (such as the duel laser firing statues that also periodically fire at you) Honestly a fairly priced game if you are looking for an old-school style shooter with some modern VR mechanics thrown in (the dodging) It also has a pretty nice rock soundtrack too. It's a no-brainer if you ever see it on a sale whilst being decent value for money when it's not. 4/5 at full price. 5/5 during a sale.

Short of Greatness

Let's start with the good: this game has great design, an awesome metal soundtrack, and colorful levels. It is conceptually solid and seems to be well-made. Dropping into it is immersive and fun. Now the bad: trying to consistently aim the crossbow, even just when firing on the stationary dummies in the hub area, feels very imprecise and unpredictable. You have to keep your hand extremely still, which is difficult to do while dodging a barrage of incoming fire with your head. I have yet to get through a single level in warrior mode, and playing in training mode doesn't offer any sort of rewards to keep me interested. In short, if the aiming were a bit less fiddly and there were more of a story or power ups to earn, it might be engaging, but right now it feels incomplete and overly difficult. The potential is there, so I may revisit it in the future. It's currently too frustrating for me to spend much more time on.

Really cool game

I’m typically a open world shooter style gamer but I really enjoyed this game I like how the weapon’s feel when they shoot and the trails make it so comfortable to point and shoot the enemies it took me a second to realize I needed to dodge some of the enemy attacks I skipped the tutorial 😇 and went straight to slaying I’m sure the developers will have some really fire games in the future too

A Challenging Adventure Worth Taking

As a big fan of rail shooters and a committed Pistol Whip player, I thought Elysium Trials would be a cakewalk—but it wasn't. The weapons—a crossbow and magic staff—felt unfamiliar at first. Unlike guns, the crossbow fires from the very top, so I had to adjust my aim. And while lightning attacks with the staff are cool, my aim got wild. I wish I could customize it to have a gun grip, but that's obviously not an option. 😂 Guess I'll have to get used to it. Being a seasoned Pistol Whipper, I came to Elysium Trials with some solid skills like dual-wielding, precise shooting, and rapid-firing. Without them, this game can be really tough, especially in Champion Mode (CM). When I first faced the CM boss, I thought my skills would be enough to take it down without struggle. But that wasn't the case. To beat bosses efficiently in any mode, you need to make good use of the lightning. Plus, in CM, you must take out smaller enemies first to charge your staff. It took a few deaths to figure that out. And even once I got it, the boss didn't get easier. The dragon's attacks were fierce, and I had to keep dodging frantically. By the time I won, I was exhausted from evading flames and firing off arrows, but the thrill of victory was worth it—especially since I became the first player outside the dev team to take down Champion Mode. 😎 Elysium Trials is definitely challenging and not meant to be beaten effortlessly. But here's the thing: even if you're not great at first, that's totally fine. The game is all about improving your skills over time. Just like what I picked up in Pistol Whip helped me here, the skills you develop in Elysium Trials will also carry over to other shooters. And with its mesmerizing environments and music, it'll never feel like a grind to practice. Sure, as an indie game, it has some rough edges. But it's absolutely worth the price. If you're seeking a serious challenge or just want to sharpen your shooting skills, Elysium Trials is a must-grab!

Excellent game! Difficult for newcomers.

If you are even slightly a fan of rail shooters, this is definitely a great game for the quest! The graphics are very good and the audio goes well with the game. As someone who is new to VR, but not new to rail shooters, I found this game to be very difficult for me even on the trainee setting. I would like to see a beginner mode added that's either reduces the required accuracy, or ideally, provides some form of pointer or reticle showing exactly where your aim is. The primary crossbow weapon is cool, but it is difficult to figure out exactly where you're aiming, at least for a new player to both the game and VR like myself. This shouldn't be taken as a mark against the game itself. Perhaps it wasn't designed with beginners to VR in mind? But it would at least be nice to have some way for complete beginners like me to not feel overwhelmed and make you more inclined to keep trying until you get better. I am barely able to beat the first level in the training mode and can't survive two minutes in the normal mode. That said, the game is so good I will keep pushing on until I get better! Perhaps this game might be the one that will hone my skills in VR in general and open the door for me to play other difficult games over time. It would still be nice to see a mode with some form of aim assist or visible targeting for absolute n00bs like myself though. 😅
