SO. MUCH. FUN!

This is such a great game, so well thought out and executed beautifully. It is now easily one of my favourite video games of all time. Here’s a short list of a few things I wrote down that I love about COMPOUND. - The 16 bit graphics - The sound effects, especially the guns, explosions, bullets wooshing by and hearing enemies approaching. - The guns, unlocking them, reloading them shooting them. - The funny generic NPC dialogue “Lovely weather we’re having don’t you agree?” “There he is.” “Kill him.” - Dodging enemy bullets - Generative levels for infinite replayability - All the different “modifier” game modes - endlessly repayable, customizable difficulty. - The game mode vending machine / shower interface - The accountant boss that looks like Hitler - Ability to throw things / people (Hitler) out the window - Ability to shoot almost anything in the levels that smash or explode, very satisfying. - Ability to use bodies as shields - All of the funny signs - The overall (prescient?) story about an evil pharma company and corporate greed - The shooting range - The test area - The difficulty selection interface - Breaking open the glass on the emergency guns - The trophies - The BFG waiting to be unlocked - The rag doll physics - The music - The *compound* bow - Blowing up several enemies with one shot - Shooting enemies in the head / leg / stomach / groin - Shooting enemies from really far away - Luring enemies into the lasers in the warehouse - The bosses and the final helicopter battle - the way Booster Bruce continues to fly around for a couple seconds after you kill him - the Bouncy shotgun - the Discord server where the dev is active and friendly

Could be great, but it’s not

Let me start off by saying I enjoy the game, the art style is really nice, and it looks really crisp on the Quest Pro. However, there are issues which stop me giving it a higher score: - procedural level layouts are boring. No verticality or anything drastic that mixes up the gameplay. If dev added some verticality, maybe some levels with different mechanics (such as no lights and needing a torch? Or more hazards you need to avoid? I don’t know, but compared to InDeath’s layouts these are pretty uninteresting). - no exploration on the levels. It would be better to hide secrets around the levels, maybe have the (up) elevator in a different location you need to find (like how Doom has you searching for the exit). - some guns are way too big and block most of the view. The rifle scope is pointless and just gets in the way. - reloading is a chore. It’s too inconsistent and fiddly, having to ensure the angle is near perfect as well as the position for ammo. It’s more fiddly than realistic reloading, which I actually enjoy. - hands are completely misaligned (not sure if this is a Quest pro issue. I can test on my Quest 2 later to see). This might be aiding the reloading issue. It does have some good points, but it’s held back by the issues above. Being as the game is all about procedural levels, and them being boring in layout, it’s hard to rate it higher.

Awesome game!

I play this pretty much every time I hop on VR. It's a very light game where I can pretty much get into it right away and just play a round or two, seeing how far I can get with the one-hit-kill mutator (which is BRUTAL, btw). You'll also be moving a lot more than you'd think. Bullets move at a forgiving speed, but still fast enough to pose a threat. Since every enemy aims at your head, you'll find yourself moving your head around to dodge bullets with fair and accurate hitboxes. Seriously, dodging bullets and firing at your attacker is some awesome John Wick-style stuff, and I love it a lot. Overall, easy on battery, performance is phenomenal, graphics are charming, the gameplay is very polished and fun, and easy to pick up and play at any time. It's also only a few 100 MBS so takes up very little storage space. Definitely recommended.

Hello, Nostalgia FPS

COMPOUND is a perfect example of what a retro style FPS should be. The brightly colored levels with a synthwave soundtrack made me feel like I was playing on the family's Windows 95. Every gun is easy to handle and reload. Every couple of floors brings a new theme / aesthetic to further mix it up. Objects in the environment are obliterated when hit with a stray bullet. Even the *belch* when consuming a health item was a nice touch! One of my all time favorite Quest games

4.7 stars for one reason

Absolutely love this game. I grew up playing wolfenstein 3D and the original doom games. Now I get to be the Guy. Super intuitive and wickedly repayable (countless resets for taking stupid shots to the face that I totally.. definitely.. might have dodged) Only issue for me is atleast 3 or 4 time each time I play, instead of going back to the hub I get dropped outside the building on the street watching cars go by and have to relaunch the game
