Hold the base of the alcohol lamp by the handle and place it inside the model.

Add about 2 spoons of sodium bicarbonate to the volcano model.

Watch the eruption. The substance that flows out of the model volcano will slowly solidify. The chemical formula for soda is NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate). When the soda breaks down in the hot sugar, it produces carbon dioxide, which causes the sugar to swell.

When the soda has released some of its liquid, remove the alcohol lamp base and close the lid of the alcohol lamp.
