About
[Metal Displacement]
- Pour 150ml of water into a beaker and add 3 scoops of copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4).
- Stir thoroughly with a glass stirring rod.
- Add 2 scoops of iron filings to the solution.
- Observe the changes in the beaker over time.
- Pour the solution through a funnel to filter the contents.
- Result: As iron transfers electrons to copper ions, metallic copper precipitates. The solution changes from a copper sulfate solution to a mixed solution with a decreased concentration of Cu2+ ions.
[ECrystal Growth via Solubility Difference]
- Place a beaker on a scale, tare it to zero, and add 150ml of water and 90g (or ml) of copper(II) sulfate.
- Prepare a second beaker with the same amounts of water and copper(II) sulfate.
- Place one beaker on a hot plate and insert thermometers into both beakers to measure their temperatures.
- Stir both solutions thoroughly using a glass stirring rod.
- Turn on the hot plate to heat the solution.
- Suspend a seed crystal tied to a wooden stick into the beaker.
- Cover the beaker with filter paper and wait for the results.
