Might as well be a gun game
There's a lot to love about this game. Great graphics. Great aiming mechanic. But two things kind of spoil the fun for me: 1) The power-ups turn it from an archery game into a machinegun game. With the "beam arrow" and "quick reload" power-ups you're essentially using a semiautomatic that looks like a bow. The challenge and satisfaction of estimating the arc of your arrow and the future position of the enemy... all of that goes out the window. Just keep tapping the trigger as fast as you can, and one of your 500 shots will hit. 2) It takes a long, long time to lose if you're even half trying. I've played quite a few times now and only once did I actually lose - every other time I just got bored and quit because even though plenty of enemies get past me, the wall just keeps taking hits for wave after wave after wave. I'd much rather have the difficulty ramp up at, say, round 3, so that getting to round 4 would actually feel like an achievement. For all my criticisms, though, I don't regret downloading it. It's good fun to just mess around with a decent archery simulator in short stints. Update: They've added a mandatory aim line. Even though there's a toggle switch for this in the settings, the aim line never goes away. You're now using a semiautomatic with a laser sight. For me, it takes all the fun out of the game. Update: The aim line issue has been resolved. I'm not sure about other changes, but the developers seem to be super responsive which I very much appreciate. For me, this game is well worth the price for the fantastic controls and graphics. The actual *game*, though - as in, the action of defending the gate for round after round - doesn't really do it for me. It needs to be harder, more varied, have some more structure... I don't know. Anyway, this is a bloody great archery simulator that does a lot with a limited platform like the Go.
