No support from the devs whatsoever

It doesn't look great on the devs releasing a 30 buck game with 3 dlcs when the game feels like the devs haven't played any other VR title or were rushing the release. I even preordered it and still have to pay for at least a DLC if I want to try that one weapon, which is not bad because of the pricing, but because the port clearly lacks polish in many areas. The worse part is that the devs haven't given any communications to the community since release and certainly have not shown interest in fixing any of the issues already present. And now the issues in detail: Important control bindings are mapped to L3 and R3, making you turn when trying to select weapons. Not even that but in such a fast paced game it feels extremely bad to have to wait for so long for the weapon wheel to show up. For some reason even the menu button is mapped to something else BUT the controller's menu button. If you're gonna create such a bad controller mapping, at least let the players remap it or something. You guys definitely need to learn from other games, specifically Into Black, since that game has nearly the same bindings but in that game they actually work as intended. Games like Hellsweeper also use way more bindings and mechanics than Hellsinger, the one difference between both being that the controls on Hellsweeper actually feel great to use, while on this one it feels like a chore. The visuals also don't feel optimized for Q3, especially the framerate (pretty bad for a fast paced game) due to ASW. In my first hour I already encountered a bunch of bugs, and each day new ones are discovered (not anymore since the community is dead): - During the tutorial calibrating the audio soft locks you - Some binding icons are bigger than what they should be - the sword detects swings when moving the wrist, not when swinging your whole arm - pumping the shotgun feels delayed when doing the gesture, so it feels unreliable to do it with the rhythm -the menu sometimes doesn't show up -the boomerangs do not work properly either -complete loss of your save file randomly The soundtrack is awesome and I'm sure there's an amazing game in there, but as it is now I can't recommend anyone to play this game.

This game is awesome

As some of the reviews mention, there are a few things that could be improved/polished, but pretty much every vr game launch is like that. Other than that, this game is fantastic and is so much fun to play. As a musician, I find the whole rhythm based combat system fantastic, and it makes everything feel so much cooler and more impressive. I would highly recommend it to anyone wondering. My advice to the developers if they see this, well first of all, fantastic job everyone, second, if the melee combat and finishers could be made a little more physics based/visceral feeling this game would be near perfect. As of now, like many other vr games, it feels kind of detached, like you are using a lightsaber, but if the melee felt like it had weight to it and was more, for lack of a better word, meaty, it would feel incredible

A boring port of a flat screen game.

To whoever is reading this, if you were a fan of the original Metal Hellsinger on PlayStation and Xbox and you want to play what is effectively just a port of the game in VR, give it a shot. Otherwise if you are looking for an actually immersive VR game, look elsewhere because this is definitely not it. I really tried to enjoy this game, I really did. I’m not just making this review negative just to be like one of those guys who will give a 1 star and then make less than 5 words and not explain anything beyond said words. When I first started up the game, I was met with a tutorial and instructions that absolutely would not leave me alone. Things were not only poorly explained but I felt like I was reading a Harry Potter book just so I could get to playing the game. And when I DID get to playing the game, I THEN met the second horseman of the apocalypse… The physics. The physics are just bad. I’m not even gonna sugar coat it. This is yet ANOTHER VR game where you can just lightly tap an enemy with your sword and they will be given massive damage. (For the developer’s sake I hope that Mr Vr Voice doesn’t make a video on this game, he will tear this game to shreds just like he did with Battle Talent.) The game also pads itself out to no end. Do you like doing some bare bones platforming in a level and then be stopped in front of a wall and be forced to destroy a hundred demons before proceeding in a level that honestly feels like the same as the rest of the game? Play Metal Hellsinger. What did I like about the game? I like that you aren’t restricted to staying on the ground to fight the boss. I love that not only do you have a dash AND a jump button, but you can “soar” though the level… and my that I mean you are just galloping like a horse if you want to speed run the level… it’s repetitive just like the enemy rush. I think what I hate the most about the game is the fact that the gimmicks of the bosses are THAT pathetic. In level 3 the boss has a force field and is like “HAHAHA YOU WILL NEVER PENETRATE MY BARRIER!” Even though you can just walk underneath it and just shoot the boss anyway. It’s like the boss isn’t even trying to kill me. If you want to play an immersive VR game where you are in Hell fighting demons to the death repeatedly, just play HellSweeper VR. It’s everything that THIS game is but a million times better, minus having the rhythm aspect.

Great game, some fixes recommended

Update: Raised to 4 stars. I have recommendations for improvement listed below; but the bottom line is I had a blast playing this game. I do still hope the developers will take my feedback seriously and make these improvements, but I can't deny how much fun I had beating the game, so they deserve an increase to my original score. ------------ First, for anyone about to start playing, don't run the audio calibration if you are playing standalone without headphones! I did so before starting the game, and it gave me +100ms on multiple runs. This setting was way off for in-game audio once the level was loaded, and I had to exit and reset it to 0/0. This setting worked great. Maybe the inconsistent performance was to blame, and the increased load when in the level threw the calibration off. Whatever the culprit, I hope this gets fixed. ------------- Second, the gesture-based reloading is frustratingly inconsistent. It often either doesn't detect the simple reload gestures or doesn't catch it with good timing. It's impossible to get into a good flow like I did on the PCVR mod. I strongly recommend adding an option to press B a second time to complete the reload AND widening the tolerances for gesture reload detection and timing. -------------- Third, and most importantly, performance needs to be more consistent. It's tough to balance visuals with performance, but I would strongly recommend having a selectable "performance mode" in the options that is tuned to run at 72 or 80 Hz without reprojection. I believe many people would prefer to give up a bit more visual fidelity for FPS in this type of game. I believe this would improve the first two issues above as well! -------------- If you are considering buying, don't let my constructive feedback detract from how much fun the game is in my opinion. It's not perfect at the moment, but it's worth it, and it can easily be a 5-star game if these issues are improved.

Mind-Shredding Chaos

Update: Months later and still no patch. It’s abandoned. But it’s so much fun I have to raise my score to five stars anyway. There are so few games that dare to have gameplay this intense and chaotic in VR. It really stands out as something very special. Original Review: Five stars for the art direction and intense combat, three stars for the technical implementation, four stars overall. First off, ignore any reviews based on this game’s “future potential” because all signs indicate that this was a contract job and once the game was released the contract was complete and the code was abandoned. So what you get is likely all you’ll ever get. Now that that’s out of the way, what’s here right now is a total blast to play if you can deal with some sloppy, unfinished elements. There’s been a lot of criticism regarding the graphics. It looks like a Quest 2 game even if you’re running on a Quest 3. The visuals are greatly scaled down from the flat screen version and it uses ASW so it has the usual ASW visual artifacts. If you’ve ever wanted to fight your way through a Hell populated with demons that look like Todd McFarlane figures come to life then hopefully you can look past the rendering technology to let the beautiful art direction shine through. As Quest games go, this is one of the better looking ones because of its skillful art direction. I didn’t think I would enjoy the music since I’m more into nu metal bands than whatever this metal sub-genre is, but within the context of the game it’s great. The music is dynamic and as you level up during the battles vocals will kick in. Just like the art direction, the soundtrack is very well executed. Unfortunately certain aspects of the game feel unfinished. The tutorials are sparse and sometimes confusing. The UI interactions in the hub world are super janky and frustrating. It’s difficult to get the selection buttons, (like the leaderboard display), to work when you click them. Picking up the books you use to change settings is also difficult, but on the plus side there are lots of settings you can tweak to customize the game once you do manage to grab a book. The gameplay is a chaotic adrenaline rush and a hell of a lot of fun. Leaping through the air, dashing, and doing old school platform game double jumps while spinning around and targeting enemies is a total blast! (I highly recommend playing while standing and turning with your feet if you have the space.) However some people strongly dislike the controls. It feels like a flat to VR port which it is, but aside from the finishing attack triggered by the X button which always feels disjointed, I’ve gotten used to the controls. You need to try to stay calm and focused and not overwork the thumb sticks since clicking them down activates the dash and weapon selection wheel. Being calm and focused is generally better anyway when the combat gets intense. I’ve played through several levels so far and the bits of story provided by introductory cut scenes and the narrator are entertaining. The bosses are challenging and feel like old school arcade boss battles. I haven’t played all the levels yet because I keep going back and replaying earlier levels. Like any rhythm game the replayabilty is very high. This is the kind of action I was hoping I would get from Hellsweeper and Dead Hook. Hellsweeper is an excellent game that has strong support from the developers, but its complex game mechanics have kept me from getting totally immersed. (I’m going to keep trying though.) Dead Hook’s environments never hooked me. I waited for a sale and bought Metal Hellsinger during a 40% off promotion, but I would have been fine paying full price now that I’ve played it. A few tips: If you play with the built in speakers, skip the audio calibration. Attack to the beat. For example if you swing the sword off beat it will do almost no damage. This is a rhythm game first and foremost, but you can disable the need to attack on the beat in the settings and turn it into just a combat game, (although your scores won’t make it to the leaderboards). And again, try to stay calm and focused no matter how hellish it gets down there. 😁
