A promising rhythm game
I'm always on the lookout for more Go movement games. With its simple controller it's not as good for this as the Quest, for example, but ever since buying Very Star I'm convinced that the Go is decent enough for such games, so I decided to give Song Beater a try. I'm a little tired of the Beat Saber aesthetics of monochromatic black and neon. I prefer Very Star's colourful arcs and stages. I wish there was at least an option to switch to something more colourful. The graphics and effects are generally well done, though, discounting their copycat nature. The game has a decent selection of songs, and it wasn't hard to find something I was willing to play to. There are also 'custom' and 'video' selection tabs, which are empty, and I'm not sure what they are meant to contain. Very Star and Smash the Beats automatically recognised songs in the music directory and generated beats for them (although neither worked well). I tried the various modes. The only one which I felt gave me real feedback was the axe. The staff blinked on and off so wasn't that playable, the tonfas were just all over the place, the blade felt like it wasn't meant for slicing, just for poking, and the phaser was neat but it wasn't clear to me why I was sometimes missing even though I thought I was aiming right. So when it comes to control, I prefer Very Star. There I make large moves with my arm, and it feels natural. So I end up moving my arm and body quite a bit. In Song Beater I feel a need to conform to the body model of the controller, where my elbow is in, and that makes all movement quite small. I think that the axe would be nice if I could set it to be farther from the body. All in all, I like this better than Smash the Beats, because it makes me reach higher and doesn't have annoying bombs which disrupt the songs, but I still enjoy the movement in Very Star more and would continue to play that. Still, I'm not planning to refund, and hope the developer will improve the game over time.
