Start giving 3 stars to short games

It's true that this doesn't retail for 70$ like a AAA title but usually you get something like 24+ hours out of a single player game in story mode... I am sick and tired of these games that only last 1.5-3 hours. Red Matter is technically well executed but honestly this could be the demo of a full game. Stop giving 5 stars to short games

Buy if you've already played RM2?

It's an odd heading, I know, but I figured some folks may have already played through Red Matter 2 first like me and are wondering whether or not to purchase this. Secondly, you might be wondering why I'd played through RM2 first. Well, RM2 was one of the first games that was continuously promoted with the launch of the Quest 3 showing that it had been updated by the devs with specific Q3 enhancements. RM1 didn't get these Q3 updates until quite some time later, with things such as improved resolution, textures, and the addition of real-time shadows. Anyway, to answer your question for people in this boat, yes, it is worth playing if you've already completed RM2. RM1 is noticeably shorter. RM2 is about 3 times the file size and feels like a more fleshed out game with a bit more variety and some combat involved. You can also die in RM2 either from enemy droids or from falling in certain sections. In RM1, you can't. It's just a straight-up puzzler. The jetpack locomotion in RM1 is also handled slightly differently, and you're more on rails with less free movement mid-flight. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. The puzzles as with RM2 are decent, fair and logical. I love the sci-fi setting and was drawn in by the storyline. I'm tempted to play through RM2 again at some point after having completed RM. I was blown away when I first played RM2, shortly the launch of the Q3 in Oct 2023. The devs use some kind of dark wizardry when it comes to the graphics. I found myself just pausing and admiring the scenery and surroundings. To be honest, I haven't played a game on the Q3 since that quite matched RM2 for graphics. When I played through RM, I found myself doing the exact same thing that I was doing over 2 years ago. I would stop for a few minutes and just look around. I must confess that I actually managed to complete RM in just one sitting. However, that's with an additional battery pack on my headstrap and everything was fully charged. I also had plenty of free time during the holiday season and was totally invested in the storyline, so I played non-stop for a few hours. But for that same reason, I'd probably advise most folks to wait for a sale to drop; I believe there is one right now as I type this review. It's also why I'd give RM 4 stars for the slightly short total play time. RM2 just pips it for me and feels like the more fleshed out, complete game. Some will disagree and say they disliked the addition of some combat elements to a puzzler game in RM2. For me, it added a bit of variety.

Technical Showpiece

There is some seriously impressive technical wizardry going on here. Even though this game is older, the recent graphical update has ensured this is once again one of the best looking games on Quest. I immediately noticed a lot of materials work and effects like dynamic shadows that are typically possibly only for PC games. And I just love the brutalist architectural designs of the space station. Very impressive visually and one of few dev teams that feel like they really get the most out of the hardware. The puzzles and storyline are interesting enough as well, but a bit more on the average side and its not very long. If you enjoyed this, make sure to play the sequel Red Matter 2, as it improves upon the first game in every way.

Well played

All in all i was very satisfied for my first vr game. The music was good the visuals were pleasent and beautifully done. The puzzles were very well thought out to really have to think on some of themand fully interactive. Loved the story now to go on to red matter 2 to find out what happens next.

Graphics

Graphics great but short game and feels kinda lonely. Yeah there's puzzles, but not enough action to complement that. There's some story and exploration but the most you'll get out of it is like 3 hours of gameplay. Would be worth the money if it was more action/skill shooting or something. And longer or more sandboxy. Not the right game for me unfortunately
