Nice idea … but there is so much wrong

I like this app because it shows where language learning can go to. Unfortunate there is a lot wrong with this app. One minute you are learning basic conversation and answering, Yes, No, Maybe, and in the next scene you are asked to pronounce “I would like to make an appointment on the next possible date, if that is alright” … In English I can learn that, but try pronouncing this in Russian when you are a basic learner and just managed the days of the week. The same goes for the topics… Nice to learn, Elephant, Lion etc, and then … “ The brown lion walks in the desert… “. (Example… not exact in-game text). The second problem is with voice recognition. It often misses the first word, and then the answer is not recognised. Single word answers like “dress”. (In French or Russian) are not recognised. I found that ‘coughing’ before answering sometimes solves the trick. A complet sentence, like … i love the red dress and would like to buy it”. Is recognised correctly even with my pronunciation of French, but the single word “dress”. (Robe) is not recognised. I had to tell the time, answered at ten hours. And it was correctly recognised as 10h. But the program expected “ ten hour” … (Dix heures , and not 10h), but the voice recognition gave the wrong feedback. So.. nice idea, and I think programs like this will be the future, but this program is very bad, If it was a free demo… I would say nice… but I payed for this … and it was not worth it…

Okay but could be better.

So, when I saw this I REALLY REALLY wanted to truly love it and to be able to give it five stars. I will list Pro's and Con's. I am an English Native Speaker who was taking the Japanese Learning Course. Pros: Immersive conversation is great and Very spot on! Feels like your in a situation in which you can use your own dialogue on what you want to say while it giving suggestions in case you do get stuck or need some help. I absolutely loved that feature and it truly felt like I was on a train speaking to another passenger. Cons: I went over several lessons including Basics, and Grammar. All it has you do is repeat phrases. It does not truly teach you how to structure a proper sentence together, nor teach you if it is informal, or formal way to say something. It also was getting several things wrong at certain points. Like Konnichiwa is not hello, but actually the greeting for "Good Afternoon." It had listed Otouto as "brother" and Imouto as "sister" but the thing about this is those two actually mean younger brother and younger sister. In the Japanese language there is not a singular word for brother or sister and usually are differentiated as "older" or "younger". It does not go over Kanji, Hiragana, or Katakana, which is also important. It helps when you know the actual alphabet and I thought would be in Grammar Lesson one, or even Basics, but was not at all. If I did not have a Japanese language background already and was taught in school by a sensei years ago, I wouldn't have picked up on things intuitively. It is NOT beginner friendly at all. Even when I legit had set it to beginner to see what it was like and help me with fluency. I think it's a good app for conversations in the conversation immersion section, but I do not think it is a good tool to truly learn a new language. If they included a break down of Grammar in its full state, as well as fixed their mic because what plays back isn't even your voice at all but the AI recorded voice as well when you repeat things. And I know at certain points I did not pronounce something correctly and it still passed me anyways in the lesson. The Grammar lessons also gave phrases unrelated to the subject matter as well, which made it all the more confusing. I think it would also help if the Developers added a section where you can actually connect to other native speakers in that language online, so real people can actually correct you if you are not saying something right and it would give good practice to talk to real people as well if they made a connection function. I think I'll use this just for the immersive conversations, but I probably will pick up Rosetta stone or also find a real tutor who can truly go over sentence structure correctly.

Great app for practice

If you don't know how to use the app, you shouldn't write a review. You can practice phrases as many times as you want. You can review the words as many times as you want. You just point at the speaker icon and have it repeated. At the end of a lesson you can review that too. You have to go into settings and set your preferences. You can set it to Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced

Good environment, short content

Okay, so I read reviews about the game not functioning or needing a mic. Never had any issues with the game functioning correctly. This game works and it works well. They did a great job creating this environment and ensuring it functions flawlessly. It’s short, you can get through all the content in about an hour. It’s also hard to tell who would benefit most from this? It’s not exactly for beginners but someone who has been learning a language for any time most likely won’t learn more than a handful of new words. Maybe someone who is about to travel abroad and wants to practice some phrases in that language. That’s about the level of learning available in this game. Amazing platform. This could be the start of a whole new way to learn a language. But for now, I’m gonna step away as the content just isn’t there yet.

Waste of money

I wanted to learn a new language. This isn’t for people who don’t know the language already. It doesn’t teach you how to pronounce words. It says a word or phrase quickly and lets you repeat it once and that’s it, even if you horribly butcher it you just move on to another word or phrase that you don’t understand. You can’t go back and repeat it at all it just keeps going. No reference provided to give you as a source to answer questions after it disappears from the screen as soon as you repeat the word once. Absolutely no way to review or repeat and practice a word before it moves on to a completely different complex sentence. This is absolutely falsely represented as a learning app. It’s an app to practice a language you’re already familiar with. Horrible, don’t waste your money.
