Nobody tells you what the waiting room smells like. I was twenty-six, freshly diagnosed with testicular cancer, sitting in a plastic chair holding a pamphlet I couldn’t read because the words kept swimming. Six months of chemotherapy followed — brutal, relentless, and terrifying in the way that serious illness is terrifying not just physically but mentally, because even the quiet moments become crowded with catastrophic possibility. My brother Eli, never one for grand gestures, dropped off a VR headset one Thursday in February and said simply, “It’s stupid, but try it.” The game was called Mental Monkeys: a floating jungle gym above a violet sky, populated by cartoon primates you had to keep emotionally regulated through breathing exercises and xylophone sequences. It was objectively absurd, and it was the first time I’d laughed from the stomach in weeks. I played it through every chemo cycle, coaxing a perpetually despondent monkey I’d named Gerald back from his cartoon abyss, and in doing so — I understand now — I was practicing the belief that despair is not permanent, that even the worst moods can move. In June, Dr. Adesanya told me the scans were clean. I went home, put on the headset, and Gerald flung a mango at my head. It felt, absurdly, like exactly the right ending.
