The Drone Hero Meta Needs

Full disclosure: I was provided a copy of this game for free to playtest and review. In Sky Runner, players will pilot a drone around their scanned room/play space and save townsfolk, homes, and livestock from various hazards like volcanos, floods, zombies, and aliens. There is also a multiplayer option as well as a level creator. The campaign features a narrator that sounds an awful like Nick Offerman. The commentary he gives when a player succeeds or completely botches something is hilarious and a nice touch. The game features bright, colorful graphics, and the augmented reality mesh that room-scans an area is impressive technology. I look forward to other applications in the future. I was able to play the various modes in a relatively small room that was 9‘ x 12‘, but would love to play it in a larger space in the future. In addition to the 20 level campaign mode, each level has multiple achievements to reward players for repeated playthroughs and those completed achievements can unlock in-game rewards. Considering this game started as an interesting tech demo almost a year ago, I have to give credit to the developer for taking the time to fine-tune the technology and controls for their game. I have heard the criticisms about the controls being difficult, I know that there are multiple control modes specifically to address this issue, players that are new to dual stick drone controls will take some getting used to, and for those that don’t have the patience to learn those controls, there is a much easier alternative control method. The early access price point is a no-brainer, all quest 3 owners should consider buying this technically impressive game. While the official price point will increase at release, it is still a fair value for what you’re getting. For gamers searching for a silly little drone game with a sense of humor, look no further. A solid 4-star game (the fifth-star will depend on how well the level editor allows players to generate and upload fresh content to keep players coming back for more, hoping to update my review in the future).

Best use of MR and fantastic game

I love the fun, ambiance, implementation, and creativity. Flying around my own house with a drone is awesome in itself, but the occlusion makes it amazingly real. I can’t fly through my half wall, or through the legs of my table - but I can fly through openings like my treadmill and under a table. The drone disappears when behind furniture too! It’s really amazing and fun. The different drones and sound effects are great. The UFO is hilarious with the “beam” instead of the chain to rescue the scientist… really awesome and enjoyable. I hope to see more features in future updates!

Truly marvellous

This is magical, flying around my room and shooting things ist pure fun. When I realised that the drone disappeares when I fly behind objects I was speechless. Edit: I didn't read many other comments but I cannot be the only one thinking that this would be an AWESOME Multiplayer experience with 2 (or more) players shooting wach others drones in mixed reality. Any chance for that? Is this currently even possible?

Hidden Gem

I was searching for a different game and came across this one and was intrigued. It looked and sounded promising, so I decided to give it a shot. I have played for less than an hour, but I will say that this one is a keeper Why you maybe thinking? It is easy to pick up and play. It is so much fun. I hit the unit with the monitor controller, and the drone moved around..so cool. The animations and character looks good. I enjoyed just flying the drone around my living room and shooting the walls, lights, and other things. Then I love to drop bombs on the table and furniture. ....so cool. The game play is solid. I like the flying saucer drone the best. Looking forward to see what else the developers has for this simple but excellent game.

Flying through your living room

The first attempts did leave me with some frustrations. Simply because I couldn't control the drone very well. But after about 15 attempts, I finally managed to complete the 1st 'fire' level. Frustration disappeared like snow in the sun. Finally, I had succeeded. On to the next one... There are several different game modes (single, multi,...) I haven't tested multiplayer yet, because I don't have the drone under control yet. But I will definitely do this in the future. The levels are easy to understand. Definitely recommended.
