Interesting atmosphere but weak gameplay

I got this game because I am a huge backrooms fan, and wanted to check out the multiple backrooms games on the meta quest store. I picked this up for $2.99 instead of the usual price of $4.99. This game is not even worth the 3 dollars let alone five. "Backrooms" has an promising atmosphere for it's graphics and I like how it presents itself. But the game falls short from it's gameplay and comfort options. Levels are poorly designed and super short, the only one I sorta liked was Level 4 - Poolrooms only because it took me more time to beat the level from it's others. Puzzles are super easy to solve. Overall, the game lacks immersive properties that other VR Games in different genres have, like footstep noises, VR Full Body and etc. Game also has bugs that disorient the player sometimes. I managed to complete the game in under 10 minutes which is honestly unacceptable. The game feels like a free demo but it's not even free. Don't pick this game up even for it's low price.

Promising atmosphere, weak execution

The atmosphere is well done and the visuals are decent—better than any other native VR Backrooms game so far. However, that’s more due to a lack of competition than truly high-quality graphics. The gameplay is very simple: find a code, key, or complete a small task, then reach the exit. Unfortunately, even that basic loop is bogged down by technical and design issues: • Movement causes motion sickness and lacks comfort options. • Some door handles have no interactivity. • Entity AI is frustrating—once it spots you, it camps, making it nearly impossible to get past. Later levels are more forgiving due to space. • Physically crouching doesn’t work, which breaks immersion. • The camera spins at the start of the first level, which is very disorienting. • Death is poorly handled—there’s no visual effect, and I can keep walking for a few seconds after dying. • You must manually open the menu and reselect the level after death, which interrupts the flow. • Grabbing doesn’t exist—keys are picked up by touching them with your body, and doors are unlocked the same way. It feels lazy for VR. • Ladders are not climbable, which limits exploration. • Levels are very short, making the game feel like a demo. • Water rendering is broken in the right eye. • You can noclip through walls, but it doesn’t feel intentional. You can see the empty space outside the rooms, revealing the lack of solid materials between them. In its current state, the game feels more like a rough prototype. There’s potential here—especially in the atmosphere—but it needs major work in mechanics, polish, and level design to be worth recommending.

Never EVER buy this game.

I wish I had looked at the reviews or even the trailer before I purchased this so called game. It is single-handedly the worst thing I could’ve spent €3 on. The animations, level design, plot and everything about this game is horrendous. This game isn’t worth a plastic button. The levels are bland, the monster isn’t scary and the ending was so disappointing, it’s just text with no ending animation or nothing, it just says you “defeated the monster” level 4 is also full of bugs, with over half of the map not being anchored and you just fall through the floor. 0/10 I hope meta gives me a refund.
